Protect NEPA – Day of Action

February 11 @ 9:00 am - 5:00 pm

Trump has launched an all-out assault on our nation’s bedrock public-interest law, the National Environmental Policy Act (fondly referred to as NEPA!).

NEPA holds our federal government accountable to the public and the planet. For over 50 years, NEPA has given people a voice and the power to prevent the federal government from selling out their environment to corporate interests.

Denver, Colorado is one of two locations in the country where a “public” hearing is taking place for the Trump Administration’s proposed rollbacks of NEPA. But, within two minutes of the required, online registration form going live all speaking and listening spots were taken, excluding countless community members, elected officials and organizations from engaging this process and sharing their testimony.

While we support the few who are permitted to give testimony inside the hearing room, across the street at The Alliance Center we’re hosting the People’s Hearing to honor ALL voices that NEPA protects.

Join us for this day of action and stand with us to protect your voice from this assault on public access.

ALL DAY (9am-5pm) February 11th:
– Action tables — submit testimony, engage in social media actions
– Stickers and Signs — come get your “Protect Your Voice” sticker and make a signs for the 5-6pm gathering outside of the hearing.

8:30am-9am; 12-1pm; 4-5:30pm — Hear from local leaders, frontline community members, and NEPA enthusiasts about why this matters. See the schedule below (and check back for updates!)

Protect your voice and stand with NEPA by joining us on February 11th.

Transportation & Parking:

The Alliance Center is located close to Union Station and next to the Tattered Cover bookstore. There are 2 hour meters along the streets and many parking garages nearby. If able, please walk, bike, and make use of bus and light rail into Union Station.

To request a sign language interpreter or other accommodations please email Sarah Clark at sarah.clark@sierraclub.org by EOD on 2/6/2020.

Why is NEPA Important?

NEPA requires federal agencies to engage in a review process to identify any significant environmental, economic, social, or health impacts a project may have before decisions are made and construction begins.

NEPA’s mandatory public comment periods also provide a powerful tool for local communities to speak up in favor or opposition of major federal actions that affect their health, well-being, and environment. Thanks to NEPA, millions of people have been given a voice in federal government decisions impacting their daily lives.

What’s At Stake:

NEPA regulations ensure that the public is given the opportunity to participate in decisions that impact their lives and that government agencies take a hard look at the environmental, public health, and economic impacts of proposed actions as a basis for making informed, science-based decisions.

The Trump Administration’s efforts to roll back NEPA’s implementing procedures are a thinly veiled attempt to make it easier to rubberstamp projects for corporate polluters, entrench the administration’s denial of climate science and severely restrict public input in federal decision-making.
