We honor Black History Month (February) by acknowledging that Black history is connected with environmental history. We celebrate the long history of Black environmental stewardship and we recognize that this movement exists because of trailblazing pioneers like Hazel M. Johnson, also known as the mother of environmental justice.
Hazel M. Johnson founded the People for Community Recovery, working tirelessly to eliminate the environmental hazards in the Southside of Chicago from the 1970s until her death in 2011. She helped create the 17 Principles of Environmental Justice, a guidepost still used by organizers today. Her activism is a reminder that environmental injustice is and has always been a racial justice issue.
We honor Hazel M. Johnson’s legacy and impact which still ripples to this day, inspiring those working for a more equitable and healthier future for all.
