Broomfield’s hard-fought oil and gas regulations have proved insufficient to protect residents from dangerous fracking impacts. As detailed in this recent article from the Colorado Sun, Broomfield’s regulations are significantly more stringent that what the state requires, but they are still not enough to keep residents safe. Broomfield citizens have suffered from serious health problems, mental anxiety, lost sleep and suffered the effects of noise, odors, vibrations, dust etc. that they attribute directly to oil and gas operations in their neighborhoods. Many of their homes are less than 2000 ft from wells. The city of Broomfield has fined operators, fought companies over the rules, and even filed lawsuits back and forth, yet the problems continue.
