Greeley Mother Sends Open Letter to Governor Polis After Benzene Exposure at Local School
Demands Shut Down of Oil and Gas Operations 1,200 ft away
GREELEY, COLORADO — Today, Greeley mother, Patricia Nelson, sent an open letter to Governor Polis and the director of the Colorado Oil and Gas Conservation Commission demanding a shut down of the 24 well pad, Extraction Oil and Gas operation just 1,200 feet from the front door of Bella Romero Academy.
The demand is in response to a press release the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment sent out on Monday, November 25th, 2019 reporting an elevated level of benzene had been measured by the CDPHE’s mobile lab located at Bella Romero’s 4-8 grade campus.
Benzene is a known carcinogen and the Center for Disease Control and the World Health Organization says there is no safe level of exposure.
The letter and demand are supported by many local Colorado groups that are fighting to protect their communities from dangerous oil and gas operations.
